Clan Graham's roots can be traced back to ancient times, and their motto, "Ne Oublie" (Do not forget), reflects their strong connection to their heritage. While the clan did not have a significant role in Anglo-Scottish battles, they showed bravery at the Battle of Dunbar in 1296. James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose, played a pivotal role in repealing the Dress Act in 1782, which prohibited the wearing of Highland Dress. The connection between Graham of Montrose and Macnaughton can be seen in the painting "Montrose" at the National Gallery of Scotland. The painting depicts Montrose being led to his hanging, with MacNaughton plaid visible under the rope tying him to the cart. It's said that a Macnaughton gave "The Great Marquis" of Montrose the ragged plaid to spare him from being dressed like a pauper. The Graham clan recently commissioned a red Graham of Montrose tartan to honor this event. The Graham clan's crest features a falcon preying on a stork, and their lands include Loch Katrine, Perthshire, Dundee, and Montrose.
The Graham Tartan features bold and bright colors such as orange, blue, yellow, red, black, and green. Its design is made up of thick lines and blocks, primarily blue and green. The tartan has evolved over time and various variations exist. The red Graham of Montrose tartan is one of the most recognizable, with broad stripes of green and black, thin yellow lines, and smaller stripes of red and blue. It is associated with Clan Graham and is a popular choice for traditional Scottish attire.
